Russia is considering shipping coal from Siberia to Asia via Arctic river transport.

The Russian Ministry of Transport has proposed to use the ports of Krasnoyarsk and Lesibirsk for pilot coal transportation along inland rivers starting this summer.

"The inland river transport infrastructure is ready to ensure export transportation of coal, timber and grain products along the river transport corridors (E. Erskine and Yenisei basin) to Southeast Asian countries via the waters of the North Sea route," the ministry spokesman said.

The coal will be transported along the Yenisei River to the Dudinka seaport, where it will be reloaded onto sea vessels through the waters of the Northern Sea Route. The Yenisei River is the fifth longest river system in the world and the largest river flowing into the Arctic Ocean.

At the same time, timber cargoes exported from the port of Lesibirsk can be transported along the Yenisei River and through the waters of the Northern Sea Route, and Moscow is determined to open this waterway in this decade, allowing for a significant increase in cargo traffic.
